The slot is the best option for wideouts that are quick, since they are able to open more easily when their route won't be covered by a linebacker or cornerback. The only non-speedy wide receiver on the list that benefits from more slot work is Corey Coleman, as he's an extremely reliable target on short and intermediate routes.

Jerry Jeudy, KJ Hamler and other receivers who are based on possession are at the bottom of the list. They're more effective on short and intermediate routes rather than deep zones. Jeudy is a good option to be a sleeper for this season since the Rams' primary slot receiver for the Rams while Courtland Sutton and Amari Cooper are likely to play on more downfield targets. Hamler should be able to be a star on intermediate and short-to middle routes, as that's what he did well in 2021 when he played for the Bills. He could be a great replacement for the departing wideout Jordan Matthews in Buffalo.

Percentage of Snaps In Slot

The proportion of snaps that a receiver makes in the slot is an excellent indicator of their ability to run deep routes. However, it's not always a reliable indicator of a receiver's skills because certain receivers excel in the slot, but can't play deep and vice versa.

For example, the Eagles Alshon Jeffery leads the league in targets per game (4.8) however, he is sixth in the slot receiving score (58.5). This is due to the fact that the majority of his targets been thrown from the outside and it is difficult to gain a first down on a wide-open deep route in this setting.

On the other hand, some receivers excel at playing inside, but struggle on the perimeter. Robby Anderson, for example was given 978 snaps by the Panthers this season. He logged 74% of his routes in the slot, compared to only 26% of his boundary routes. This is an enormous distinction and demonstrates how much more efficient Robby Anderson is when he is aligned to the slot.

Additionally, the Buccaneers' Chris Godwin lines in the middle on the majority of his passing downs and has a top-five slot receiving score (58.5). However, he also played 51% of his perimeter routes last season and is a top performer in one-on-one coverage.

Speed receivers tend to be more efficient when they are lined up inside. They are able to be targeted further down the field and are often swarmed by one-on-1 coverage. You'll find names like Mike Evans, Amari Cooper and Julio Jones in our top five.

On the flip side we have some outstanding slot cornerbacks such as McDuffie and Moore in this group. McDuffie is the top player in the NFL in forced fumbles with seven, while Moore is the most effective tackle-stop performance (-3.5) on this list. Spagnuolo made McDuffie's abilities more effective by putting his slot for nickel and dime packages and then moving him to the outside when playing base defense. Moore's ability in stopping big run plays is an enormous advantage when playing the slot.

Percentage of Snaps Outside

While the NFL's top receivers, such as Baldwin, Golden Tate and Larry Fitzgerald excel on the perimeter, it's also important to note that their slot counterparts are just as excellent. Wide receivers with an excellent slot grade score touchdowns about the same as those on the perimeter. This is due to the fact that quarterbacks are more consistent in their target distribution when they throw to slot and outside wide receivers rather than other inside options such as backfield passers and tight ends.

It's therefore interesting to see a player like CeeDee lamb on this list for 2022. He plays the slot in three WR sets and flanker in two of the sets. He's actually running more routes in the slot than most of the players on this list. This is an excellent way to generate matchup benefits for your team and helps to explain why Lamb is rated as the top-rated slot receiver in our system this season.

Of course, he plays the X position and makes big plays on the perimeter, too. Lamb isn't as powerful as some of the other players in this list, but he's an elite wide receiver that is well-suited to the Cowboys scheme.

Mecole Hardman is another example of a player who's capable of putting up big numbers on both targets. He's among the best in the league at taking throws from behind his shoulders. He's also a superb contested-catch player.

Jalen Hilton is another player who is a slot specialist. He's lined up in this position on 85.7 percent of his defensive snaps thus far in the season. He's allowed the third-lowest target EPA and the fifth-best online slots run stop EPA for cornerbacks that are aligned in the slot, making him an important part of his team's defense. He's had a difficult time stopping passes from the outside, and his EPA against this kind of target is negative. This is because he's been playing with linebackers and safety who aren't able to compete with Hilton's speed, size, and route-running abilities.
